I want students to understand that creativity isn't limited to 'performers': it belongs to all of us, and it can shape everything we do both inside and outside of Drama.

What makes teaching Drama and Dance at Bedales Prep so wonderful?

Teaching Drama and Dance at Bedales Prep is truly special because our students bring an extraordinary sense of creativity, individuality and imagination into the room every single day. Lessons never feel repetitive or routine; instead, they feel alive, energised and full of possibility. Whether a class is exploring character, movement, storytelling or ensemble work, the students’ willingness to take risks, try new ideas, and support one another transforms each session into a shared creative adventure.

What are you trying to encourage and instil in your students?

In my teaching, I aim to instil a culture where every student feels genuinely valued in the classroom, in rehearsals, and on stage. Whether someone has a leading role or works behind the scenes, we emphasise that we are all equally important and that a production only comes alive when everyone contributes with pride and purpose. I want students to understand that creativity isn’t limited to ‘performers’: it belongs to all of us, and it can shape everything we do both inside and outside of Drama. My goal is to create an environment where students feel free to take risks, share ideas and express themselves without fear of judgement, knowing they are supported by a community that celebrates collaboration, curiosity, and the unique spark each person brings.

What do you think makes Bedales Prep so special?

What makes Bedales Prep so special to me is the unique blend of history, ethos and creative spirit that you feel the moment you walk into Bedales. The long‑standing commitment to valuing the individual and nurturing creativity is still at the heart of everything we do. The energy inside the classrooms, the warmth, openness and spark that comes from students who feel safe to express themselves, to collaborate and to explore ideas in ways that honour our ethos of ‘work of each for weal of all’. There is something truly special about teaching in a place where young people are encouraged to be curious, courageous and wholeheartedly themselves. It creates an atmosphere that feels alive with possibility, and I feel privileged to be part of it every single day.
