As part of their Global Perspectives project, Block 5 (Year 11) students Emmanuelle, Lily, Rodion and Max presented a detailed proposal on carbon offsetting school trips to Will Goldsmith (Head of Bedales) and Rob Reynolds (Director of External Relations). Their aim was to find a practical way to reduce the environmental impact of air travel associated with school trips.

Through in-depth research, they conducted a survey that found over 80% of students are concerned about the environmental impact of travel. They also analysed the carbon footprint of annual school trips and explored the financial costs of offsetting these emissions through a reputable carbon offsetting firm.

During their presentation, they linked their findings to the school's 10-year strategy, which aims to establish a sustainable approach to travel for school trips. While Bedales already prioritises train and coach travel where possible, some trips still require air travel, making offsetting a key consideration.

The next steps for the students include exploring an optional carbon offsetting scheme for school trips and gathering feedback from parents through the Bedales Parents' Association (BPA). Will has expressed his willingness to review and reconsider the school's approach to air travel and offsetting.

It's inspiring to see students not just researching sustainability but actively influencing school policy. Well done to Emmanuelle, Lily, Rodion and Max for their hard work and commitment to making a real difference.
