Time to reform GCSEs - Will Goldsmith

21/08/2026

In a recent article for School Management Plus, Will Goldsmith explores growing calls to reform England's GCSE system, arguing that a one-size-fits-all model no longer serves all young people effectively.

The article highlights concerns that the heavy emphasis on examinations at 16 can contribute to disengagement, poor wellbeing and limited progression opportunities for some students. At the same time, Will argues that GCSEs may not provide enough challenge for the most academically ambitious learners.

While welcoming proposals for greater technical and vocational options from age 14, he suggests that flexibility should extend across the whole ability range. Drawing on examples including Bedales Assessed Courses (BACs), the article points to alternative qualifications that enable students to pursue deeper learning, develop independence and better align their education with their strengths and aspirations.

Ultimately, Will advocates a more flexible 14-18 framework, combining a strong common core with personalised academic and technical pathways, to improve engagement, achievement and opportunity for all young people.
