Celebrating creativity in the community
Pieces of art created by pupils at Bedales went on display at independent shops and cafés in Petersfield this week as part of an exhibition to celebrate the work of children in local schools.
Pupils at all three Bedales schools contributed artwork to Art Shop 2022, which was organised by Bedales Prep, Dunhurst's Head of Art and Design Susan McFarlane and includes artwork from children at a number of other local schools including Sheet, Steep, Froxfield and Churcher’s Juniors.
Art Shop 2022, which runs for two weeks from 6-20 June, follows in the footsteps of previous exhibitions organised by Dunhurst, the last of which was held in 2019 to mark Fairtrade Week. Although this year there is no specific theme, schools have worked with individual shops to create artwork that reflects the shop, its wares and its ethos.
Photography by Bedales Senior students is on display at Petersfield Photographic, whilst pupils at Bedales Prep, Dunhurst created applique summer flowers crafted from upcycled Liberty print fabric (on display at pre-owned clothes shop Forget Me Not), Arts and Crafts inspired tiles (exhibited at The Tile Store) and ‘Books and Coffee’ themed artwork (on display at One Tree Books). A display of busy bees made of papier-mâché bees, produced by children at Bedales Pre-prep, Dunannie, is on display at Wilson Hill.
Other shops exhibiting work from children at local schools include Madeleine’s Kitchen, Sew Creative, Juniper Sustainable, The Bran Tub and Bunch’s Farm Shop.
Susan McFarlane said: “We are grateful for the opportunity to exhibit our pupils’ artwork and be a part of an event at the heart of the community which celebrates the creativity of children in collaboration with much loved independent shops. We hope many people will visit to see the artwork before 20 June, and would love to get even more schools and shops next year.”
