Teachers and Sixth Formers took to the fields on Saturday to make hay while the sun shone. Bedales has been making its own hay since the school was founded in 1893 and this tradition is a fine example of the school’s motto ‘Work of Each for Weal of All’ in action. The school community worked hard to collect all the bales and load them onto the trailer before helping to carefully stack them in the Black Barn. 400 bales were stored overall, not bad for a day’s work! The hay will be used to feed Hector the horse and the sheep through the winter and any excess will be sold. Peter Coates was proud to note that for the last 30 years no herbicides or fertilisers have been used on the land, so describes the hay as ‘wholesome’.
