Tailoring learning to individual needs, interest and aptitude
The Learning Support department embraces the Bedales founding principles of ‘Head, Hand, Heart’ and the development of the whole child is at the centre of the teaching and learning process. Learning takes place in an environment that develops inquisitive thinking and encourages independent learning.
Learning strategies are differentiated and multisensory to cater to the child’s individual needs and preferred learning style. Tasks are designed to build confidence, self-esteem and resilience and close links are made with the class teachers to ensure skills learnt in the LS lesson are transferred to the classroom.
Developing confidence, independence and a love of learning
- The Head of Learning Support works closely with the class teachers for early identification and support of individual needs in the classroom.
- Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) are created with targets for the students and recommendations for the classroom. Progress is reviewed through regular feedback from class teachers as well as Learning Support teachers.
- Fully qualified Learning Support teachers use a range of resources to make the one-to-one learning enjoyable and interactive, including activities on the computer, iPad apps, board games and homemade kinaesthetic resources.
- In addition to English, Maths and English as an Additional Language (EAL) support, Individual Study Skills are available where pupils are encouraged to develop as independent learners through learning time management, personal organisation and revision techniques.
