Bedales Prep supports Coronavirus heroes
Pupils at Bedales Prep, Dunhurst have been showing their support for the emergency services during the Coronavirus crisis by creating artwork for doctors, nurses and other keyworkers currently battling to contain and combat the virus.
With the UK currently in lockdown, pupils were challenged by the Awesome Movement to send “a message of love, support and gratitude” to keyworkers by creating positive pieces of art – whether a drawing, painting, photo or collage – using materials they have at home.
Images of the finished artwork are shared on the Awesome Movement’s social media channels (including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) during the coronavirus crisis, and selected pieces will also be included in an Awesome Movement Art Book, which is currently in development.
The Awesome Movement was launched by a Bedales parent, Michael Howard, in 2018 to show appreciation for ‘everyday heroes’ – including those working in the emergency services, NHS and armed forces – after reading about members of the public who left hostile and insensitive notes on ambulances called out for emergencies.
In March 2019, Dunhurst became the first school to pledge their support for the Awesome Movement and pupils at the school have supported their initiatives, such as the Awesome Movement day and sending thank you messages to Emergency services staff.
Head of Dunhurst Colin Baty said: “The Awesome Movement recognises the real heroes in our lives - the emergency workers, NHS staff and support staff. They are incredible people who put themselves on the front line to look after us all. The Awesome Movement recognises the role these services and people running them have in our life.. Encouraging our pupils to be outward-looking, being kind and showing gratitude for others is a key part of our ethos so I am delighted that we are taking this opportunity to honour key workers in this way.”
