Hannah Lockyer, a practitioner from Rambert Dance Company, led dance students from Block 4 - 6.2 for a three-day residency. The days consisted of a technique class every morning, learning Rambert’s energetic movement vocabulary from the Castaways (2013) and working with each other on extensive choreographic tasks. Rambert’s Castaways “is a humorous and playful exploration of human nature” whereby the dancers are ‘trapped’ with only a vent that supplied them with aid. Bedales students were able to explore this concept and present their own ideas, which saw many creative suggestions, but eventually resulted in the idea of a ‘prison setting’. This concept continued to develop throughout the three day’s exploring movement, voice and characterisation. This intense process saw the dance students, of different blocks, collaborating together with Hannah to create a physical and comical 10 minute piece, Block: Cell D.
