I left Bedales and went straight to the University of Sussex to study American Studies (i like to think before the subject became so popular...). My third year was spent on exchange at the University of California Santa Cruz which was truly a life changing experience. I hugely benefited from my year abroad academically and personally, and would highly recommend any prospective student to consider a subject that includes a year/term abroad.
Following University I completed a NCTJ (National Council for the Training of Journalists) Journalism Diploma at Brighton, which was subsidised by the University of Sussex. It was a fantastic introduction into the world of journalism, and a great qualification. You can get bylines published in the local paper and gain real newsroom experience. I would suggest it for people interested in journalism or editorial careers (NCTJ certificate is a prerequisite for many jobs).
I currently live in Berlin and work as a Copywriter for a tech start-up. Previously, my first job was writing copy for a pram and car seat company; I was originally an intern and then progressed up the ranks. I always loved writing but didn’t fancy myself as a journalist. The job I have now suits me wonderfully.
Bedales will always hold a strong place in my heart. The teaching made me very confident in my own abilities and helped me to fall in love with words and literature. I also made truly lifelong friends, and have incredibly fond memories of a magical few years in Steep.
