From the Bedales Record, 1918-19:
“E H Sanderson was at the School from 1913 to 1916, a leading figure in all games, and Head Boy in his last year. He then joined the Inns of Court OTC, and from that was transferred to the RA Cadet School, and obtained his commission in the RFA. He joined his battery in France in August 1917, and took part in all the heavy fighting of the following year to the north of Ypres, both in the retreat and the final advance. It was during this advance, that, on 23 September, when engaged in action with German batteries covering their retreat, he and several other officers were killed by a shell in a barrage so severe that their bodies could not be recovered for some hours. It was then found that death must have been instantaneous. He was buried where he fell.”
