Boarding in the country... one hour from London
In a recent article for Angels & Urchins Schools Guide 2019/2010, Colin Baty explains how boarding at Bedales Pre Prep, Dunhurst, helps with the aim of developing inquisitive and independent thinkers who enjoy school.
Boarders have a longer school day which, says Colin, allows time for valuable additional activities. The children help to design these, and get the benefit of the many staff who involve themselves and share their interests and passions. Boarders also get to take part in whatever else may be happening around the school β for example, if arts scholars are going on a gallery trip, boarders will go with them.
Colin acknowledges that being away from home for the first time can be hard at times for younger boarders, but says: ββ¦it is our experience that a school life packed with variety, stimulation and fun can ease the transition.β More generally, he observes that boarding pupils grow into being rounded, engaged and socially adept individuals who look after each other and, importantly, thrive academically and do well in the Senior School.
