Contributing to the community
Head of Bedales Will Goldsmith has outlined the contribution the School is making to the Petersfield community and wider education sector.
In an interview with Petersfield Shine Radio, Will described how Bedales is prepared to challenge the norm and question the purpose of education. He set out how Bedales Assessed Courses are showing what works as an alternative to GCSEs, removing the unnecessary pressure of two sets of high-stakes exams at age 16 and 18. By showing what’s possible from an innovative curriculum, these courses continue to generate interest nationally and in parliamentary committees, and are informing the debate on the case for reform of the education system.
In the context of the current national conversation on independent schools and how they should “pull their weight” in their communities, Will cited Bedales’ work with local groups and charities such as the Petersfield Youth Theatre, the Rural Refugee Network and the FitzRoy charity which supports people with learning disabilities. The School’s bursary programme for young people facing specific barriers to a successful education was also highlighted.
In concluding the interview, Will highlighted the Steep 900 celebration event which is being hosted by Bedales on 9 November to mark the 900th anniversary of the historic church adjacent to the School and which he said “represents the strength of the community.”
