Pupils at Bedales Prep, Dunhurst raised money for homelessness charity Shelter last week when they took part in the Royal Horticultural Society’s Big Soup Share.

An annual event introduced by the RHS in 2017 to celebrate 10 years of the Campaign for School Gardening, the Big Soup Share sees schools across the country cook soup from harvested produce.

As in previous years, Dunhurst’s Head of Outdoor Work, Ryan Walsh, asked pupils to bring in vegetables. They then made several batches of soup in their Outdoor Work lessons.

Understandably, pupils weren’t able to sell the soup in the playground this year, but the emphasis on charity was upheld as the school made a donation of £50 to Shelter on their behalf.

Speaking after the event, Ryan Walsh said: “The Big Soup Share is a great community event that helps to raise the profile of homelessness, gardening and healthy eating every year. Although we weren’t able to run it exactly as we have in previous years, I am proud that – in spite of the restrictions – every single pupil had the opportunity to get involved in their Outdoor Work lessons and we made a donation for a very worthwhile cause.”
