Ivon Hitchens painting to be auctioned for JBF
A painting by Old Bedalian Ivon Hitchens is set to be auctioned by Christie’s on 2 March, to raise funds to help children from challenging home and school environments experience a Bedales education.
The 1968 painting, ‘Variations on an Interior, Inside’, will be auctioned as part of Christie’s Modern British Art Day Sale on 2 March after it was gifted to Bedales by Ivon’s son, John Hitchens, with the explicit wish that it be auctioned to raise funds for the John Badley Foundation. With matched funding from the school, the proceeds from the sale will fund at least one full bursary place for five years at Bedales.
Painted at Selsey, where Ivon and his wife Mollie bought a holiday home in the 1960s, ‘Variations on an Interior, Inside’ is available to view on the Christie’s website here, where you can browse the full Modern British Art Day Sale and register to bid via the real-time bidding platform. Bedales Head of Development Tanya Darlow said: “It is fitting that the proceeds from this sale will help children from challenging home and school environments experience the distinctive education and opportunities that Ivon, John and two further generations of the Hitchens family have experienced at Bedales. A remarkable legacy and one that will transform children's lives. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to John for this extraordinary gift.”
